Avoiding confrontation on social media

It does not matter what you post on social media, there are people who are going to find something wrong with it. There is no perfect plan on how to build your brand on social media.

Social media confrontations can not only be time consuming, it can also spoil your mood and thereby making you have an unproductive day.

There are some questions you need to ask yourself before posting anything on social media:

1. To the best of your knowledge, is the information correct?

You need to check your facts before posting or joining a conversation on any topic. Try as much as possible to have an idea on the topic of the conversation.

2. Is it worth it? Does it add value?

Take some time to think about what you want to post, as tempting as it might seem to post something that just comes to you, think about it, does it enhance your image? does it represent who you are? is it neccessary to join in the conversation? is the thread of conversation en-lifting?

3. Are you willing to accept and ready for contrary opinions from others?

You should have a plan in place for any contrary opionion. Some may not be very nice, some may be abusive, you must have a plan not to respond in like manner but stating your opinion in a respectable way.

4. Is it necessary to reply to a rude comment?

Like earlier started, some people are going to be obnoxious and rude in their comment, you have to evaluate your reply to such comment, do you have to reply or simply ignore it? how do you reply if necessary? If you have to reply, do it in a firm but respectful way, you can even turn it around to provide more information, but don’t tolerate bullying.

5. What do you want to achieve with your post?

Know exactly what you want to achieve with each post and stay on message. Don’t get sidetracked with comments from others.

Exercise a little caution on social media, remember that it is text and not spoken words so misunderstanding can arise, you are also interacting with different persons from different nations and background, with different beliefs and perspective, at different points in their life and their own way of interpreting texts.

However this should not make you exercise fear that you are going to upset anyone, social media is meant to be fun and good for business, so go ahead and enjoy it.
