Donald Trump, 2016 US election and social media

The President-elect of the United States of America, Donald Trump credited the social media with helping him win the US election. He said it gave him a platform to fight back against his opponents without having to spend the kind of money his opponents spent on traditional media.

In an exerpt of an interview on CBS he said ““The fact that I have such power in terms of numbers with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, et cetera, I think it helped me win all of these races where they’re spending much more money than I spent. And I won.”

Mr Trump claims to have 28million followers on social media and he called it a tremendous, modern, great form of communication.

He added, “When you give me a bad story or when you give me an inaccurate story or when somebody other than you — a network, or whatever, because of course, CBS would never do a thing like that, right? — I have a method of fighting back.”

If Doanld Trump wanted to get the same reach with traditional media as with his social reach, it would cost him $380 million. Instead, he’s getting it for free in tweets, likes and shares.

More people than ever get their news mainly from the social media. Among 18- to 29-year-olds, nearly two-thirds said social media is the most helpful means of learning new things about politics, according to a study released last year by the Pew Research Center. Pew Research Center found that 44 percent of American adults said they had learned something new in the past week about the election from social media.
